The folksy track is the Mumbai-based singer-songwriter’s first release of 2021
When Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Pranita Nair Pandurangi’s tutor, Kaumudi Munshi, passed away last year due to COVID-19, the artist wanted to pay homage through music. “I wanted to release something that was taught to me by her as a tribute,” says Nair Pandurangi. The musician has gone and done just that with her latest offering, the folksy “Beiraada Nazar.”
Inspired by the ghazal, the new song brings in elements such as electronic beats and lush vocal harmonies while staying traditional with the use of a tabla and Indian classical guitar. The vocalist says, “The ghazal is a very versatile form of poetry, and each couplet has a different theme.” She adds, “However, we stuck to just two couplets that deal with the theme of romance, more specifically, love at first sight.”
“Beiraada Nazar” was recorded at home studios and Nair Pandurangi co-produced it with New Delhi-based multi-instrumentalist Kabeer Singh. Singh also mixed and mastered the song.
The track’s accompanying video – shot and edited by filmmaker Pranav Vanmali – is meant to portray a fashion film with beautiful frames of the singer-songwriter taking a walk on the beach and reading a book. Nair Pandurangi wanted the aesthetic of the clip to have a traditional yet modern feel and says, “I got in touch with Sangeeta Vyas, who is the founder of Rooh by Sangeeta Vyas, a fashion label that features Chikankari outfits. It’s turned out to be a lovely collaboration between us.”
As for the rest of 2021, the artist wants to release three pop songs and a ghazal original of her own. There’s also music videos in the works as well as an electronic mix of a track from her debut album Rang.
