At the start of 2020, Tamil-Canadian firebrand rapper Shan Vincent de Paul made his way to India with compadre and producer Yanchan and wowed Indian audiences on their debut tour.

Now, after adopting the new artist moniker SVDP, the rapper and Yanchan will return to India this March, performing in six cities alongside Taipei artist LEO37 for what is touted as The Phoenix Saga India Tour, booked by entertainment company Third Culture. From March 1st in New Delhi, SVDP will perform in Mumbai (March 3rd and March 9th), Chennai (March 4th), Bengaluru (March 11th) and Hyderabad (March 12th).

SVDP will conclude the shows with a performance in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, supporting composer Santhosh Narayanan’s Sounds of the South live project. The duo worked together on “Neeye Oli,” which also featured fellow Tamil-Canadian artist Navz-47 on vocals and lyrics by Arivu, ending up on the soundtrack to Tamil film Sarpatta Parambarai in 2021.

The artist says in a statement about his return to India, “I’ve been waiting to return to tour India for three years now. The pandemic obviously stood in the way of touring in general, but to finally re-connect with my core audience means everything to me.”

The setlist will likely include not just songs like the multiple “Mrithangam Raps” tracks with Yanchan, but also powerful songs about his journey as a Tamil immigrant and his former home in Sri Lanka, as heard on the album Made In Jaffna from 2021.

More recently, SVDP took a different turn with the moody, club-friendly album VVV, which will also be performed on the Phoenix Saga India Tour. “I have yet to perform a lot of the records off Made in Jaffna or VVV live, so it’s going to be super exciting to see how they are received. I also got a couple of unreleased songs I’m going to be debuting for the first time ever on this tour, it’s important I give my supporters something special every time. I think everyone has been anticipating the return of live shows so I feel an added pressure to make it as memorable as possible for my audience,” he added in his statement.
