Singer-Songwriter Subhi Taps Kanishk Seth for ‘Wake Me Up (Dark Remix)’
Chicago-based Subhi previously worked with the producer-singer for her Hindi song ‘Aagosh (Reprise)’
Over the last four years of releasing music, Subhi Khanna (who goes by her first name) has worked on pushing the boundaries of her songwriting. From jazz-pop to electronic pop and heartbreak ballads in Hindi, Subhi has crossed a lot of stylistic paths. Her 2020 single “Wake Me Up,” for example, built upon a melodramatic pop side heard on singles like “Cage” and her EP Define Me, released earlier this year.
The Chicago-based Indian singer-songwriter had consolidated singles for her EP, including “Wake Me Up,” which was created just before the Covid pandemic caused shutdowns across the U.S. Subhi recalls she was traveling to Los Angeles to meet producer Taylor Sparks when the pandemic was declared. “I knew it was the last time I would be traveling, be in a studio or meet family/friends for a while. ‘Wake Me Up’ is a song about wanting to emerge from the darkness created by the fear of being lonely & lost in this pandemic. I was hoping things wouldn’t get worse but they did,” she says.
Now, about a year on from the release of the single, Subhi has teamed up with Mumbai producer-singer Kanishk Seth for a ‘Dark Remix’ of the English track. The duo previously worked together on a reprise of Subhi’s love song “Aagosh” that came out in September last year. The remix was spurred by fan requests for an “Indian version” of “Wake Me Up,” one that Seth delivers with flair. Subhi adds, “I love the sound of this remix – it has a modern, contemporary vibe with a hooky shehnai melody adding a cool Indian touch.”
