The Earth Below Drops Smoldering New Lyric Video for ‘Crimson Gold’

Mumbai-based multi-instrumentalist Deepak Raghu released his debut full-length 'Nothing Works Vol. 2: Hymns for Useless Gods' earlier this year

Bengaluru-bred, Mumbai-based Deepak Raghu aka The Earth Below offered a plugged-in, doom and gloom record when his debut full-length album Nothing Works Vol. 2: Hymns for Useless Gods was out in April this year via Unherd, invoking mythic themes amongst tales of death, hopelessness and yet a resigned persistence in the face of it all.

Drawing from doom (considering he’s been part of sludge/doom band Shepherd and stoner/doom band Bevar Sea), rock and alternative, Raghu collaborated with guitarist Ramanan Chandramouli and bassist-producer Leslie Charles for the album. While plans for touring with the project may have been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s still plenty to explore within the music. A new lyric video for the emphatic song “Crimson Gold” brings out these very themes of death and gods.

In the video created by New Delhi artist Shrey Kathuria (from instrumental rock act Hitherto), shots of snakes and Egyptian mummies and skulls are interspersed with Raghu’s imposing delivery of the lyrics. The video follows studio performance versions of songs like “Abydos” and the album’s opening track, “Brave Noise.”
