Earlier this week, Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Maalavika Manoj aka Mali released a video portrait for the title track of her 2017 debut EP Rush.
Shot by New Delhi-bred photographer Gorkey Patwal, the video features portrait clips of Mali
standing still in the quaint streets of Khar in Mumbai. The non-stop mobility of Mumbai’s
autorickshaws and pedestrians, frame a stationery Mali in the center.
The lyrics equate the subject of the song to a drug and the musician sings about how she can’t get enough, “Tripping on this feeling/I’m suspended from the ceiling/Take me over/Take me in.” Perhaps that’s the reason for this video to be shot in the streets of Mumbai, as anyone who has ever lived in the city can tell you, the Maximum City consumes you. One can get so engrossed in the daily hustle and bustle that they can’t separate themselves from the city. The “rush” of the city becomes addictive. It is only when one stops for a second, they realize that they’re lodged in the heart of it and that’s exactly where one wants to be.
The video perfectly captures this feeling as the movement in the streets is set in slow motion with Mali standing perfectly still in the middle. The music complements this video with a melancholic yet hopeful pop sound, reminiscent of the likes of Fleetwood Mac.
