Nagaland pop-rock band Trance Effect spent most of 2019 in the limelight for their peppy tunes – releasing a single called “New Beginning” and performing at Ziro Festival of Music in Arunachal Pradesh and the Hornbill Festival on home ground – but their new song “Clowns” sees them level up.
The radiant track brings together vocalist Iuli Yeptho’s earthy R&B vocals, out-of-the-box melodies from guitarist Tako Chang and the roomy rhythmic unit of bassist-lyricist Imnamaong Imchen and drummer Sosang Lkr. It got an additional boost when businessman and music enthusiast Anand Mahindra tweeted about the band with a link to the “Clowns” music video. Imchen says over email, “We were quite surprised and stoked that Anand Mahindra had tweeted about the band. One of India’s business tycoons had shared about the band’s music and the attention we were receiving from his tweet, the views on the video started increasing and we’re quite happy about it.” Guitarist-composer Ehsaan Noorani also shared the music video, and it now stands close to 40,000 hits on YouTube at the time of writing.
The publicity has even led to more streams for “New Beginning” and their 2018 debut single “Stop Pretending.” Anchored in positive messages about perseverance and staying true to oneself, Trance Effect are now keen to make the most of their new fanbase by releasing their first EP – also called Clowns – later this year. Imchen says, “Clowns is the title of the EP, that’s why the music video – which is a story – will have its continuation in our next music video. We want the listeners and viewers to be kept in suspense of what’s going to happen next. The EP is more of like our stories turned into songs. We hope the listeners can relate to it.”
