Purbayan Chatterjee – “Shanmukhapriya (The Mystic)” ft Shankar Mahadevan, Antonio Sanchez, Michael League, V. Selvaganesh, U. Rajesh

Ft. Shankar Mahadevan, Antonio Sanchez, Michael League, V. Selvaganesh, U. Rajesh

The first glimpse of ace sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee’s upcoming fusion album Unbounded – Abaad sets the stage for a collab-heavy, sublime offering. “Shanmukhapriya (The Mystic)” brings together Shankar Mahadevan and V. Selvaganesh’s Carnatic influences to the front, with mandolin veteran U. Rajesh, marrying it with jazz grooves carried ably by bassist-composer Michael League (from Snarky Puppy) and drummer-composer Antonio Sanchez (who often performs with guitar great Pat Metheny). Unbounded – Abaad will release on September 10th via U.K.-based label Sufiscore.

Hotel Kali – Hotel Kali

When Berlin-based artist Golden Diskó Ship aka Theresa Stroetges came to Kolkata in November 2018 for an artist residency, her intent to collaborate led her to seasoned synth artist and event promoter Varun Desai, bassist Debjit Mahalanobis and singer-producer Suyasha Sengupta aka Plastic Parvati (from erstwhile rock group The Ganesh Talkies). The result is Hotel Kali and their eponymous debut album, which released in June. There’s mind-bending post-rock, dancefloor-friendly rhythms and everything in between on the seven-track record.

SnowShoe – Pinwheel

Comprising material that was created over the span of a decade, producer and guitarist Rahul Nadkarni aka SnowShoe teamed up with drummer-producer Harsh Karangale (Bitmap) to release Pinwheel. Described as a “little wormhole back to 2012,” there’s sublime electronic and downtempo music across six tracks, a reminder of the artist’s rare but uplifting live performances.

Eternal Returns – “Flesh Robot”

Mumbai band Eternal Returns throw a curveball of industrial and groove metal influences into their latest single “Flesh Robot,” taken from their upcoming album Hunchback Hatred. Still containing nods to their extreme metal roots and sprinkled with symphonic elements, “Flesh Robot” is about as visceral as it gets from the band.

Baba – Flavour Town EP

Goa-based producer Baba aka Shubham Sharma takes a detour from his ambient, glitch-hop and IDM side on his latest three-track EP Flavour Town, released via 4NC¥. With the tracks taking their name from vape flavors, there’s trap banger territory on “Peach Tobacco,” chill yet buoyant beats on “Cotton Candy” and a return to dark menacing moods on “Lava Flow.”
