Watch EXO-SC Chanyeol’s Intoxicating Video For ‘Nothin”
The rapper delivers slow trap on his solo release from the upcoming LP ‘1 Billion Views’
Rapper, producer and EXO member Chanyeol has dropped his solo track titled “Nothin'” from 1 Billion Views, a collaborative upcoming album with bandmate Sehun. The duo–known together as EXO-SC–will release the nine-track LP on July 13th and each rapper has a solo track on the record.
On “Nothin'” Chanyeol experiments with dark and slow rolling trap, layering it with guitar riffs that border on alt-rock. He also chooses to go the vocalist route, a surprising choice for this instrumentation but also brilliant in the way it allows the track to veer into underground K-R&B vibes. It’s a different side to the artist whose previous solo and EXO-SC releases have been brighter, uplifting variations of pop and hip-hop–as seen on the duo’s pre-release single “Telephone” which dropped yesterday. Written and composed by Chanyeol, “Nothin'” is about keeping one’s head clear and sticking to one’s own path no matter what people say or throw at you.
The video is just as heady as the track; Chanyeol alternates between dazed and frantic as he wanders through a giant studio space. Everything is bathed in red light–seemingly because it’s a photography studio–and the rapper develops a few strips of film before staggering to a pin board full of photographs and ripping several out. He finally pulls open the entire wall and runs free into blue light, away from the studio. The clip seems to depict a conflict between the art and the artist, possibly a reflection of Chanyeol’s own journey as a musician.
According to EXO-SC’s album release schedule, the music video for Sehun’s solo track “On Me” will drop tomorrow.
