Watch: Run Pussy Run’s Psychedelic Video “Roaches”
The Pune freak funk outfit, which is fronted by Gowri Jayakumar, goes retro on the cockroach-filled video for their latest single
A song with as quirky a theme and melody as Run Pussy Run’s “Roaches” deserves an equally eclectic video. The Pune-based funk outfit, lead by frontwoman Gowri Jayakumar, premiered the new track along with the accompanying video over the weekend, which sometimes surpasses the song in its eccentricity.
Be warned, katsaridaphobics: this may not be the video for you. “Roaches” is true to its name, even in visual form. Jayakumar wrote the song about the terrifying little creatures while she was at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, where she (rather worryingly) saw several while she was waiting.
The track features Mumbai multi-instrumentalist Jose Neil Gomes on electric violin. The video, too, has its fair share of guest stars, including Karl Marx, a woman from a Raja Ravi Verma painting and Steve Jobs. The exceptional visuals were the product of a collaboration between the band and Pune-based LMB Productions, led by animator and director Anurag Ramgopal. Reportedly, Ramgopal’s team worked through the night to create the video’s weird and wonderful worlds.
The hard work certainly shows: with each re-watch, you’ll find new oddities and hidden details. But if you have a deathly fear of cockroaches, perhaps proceed with caution.
